Background:Many Chinese, American, and non-Chinese men and women are reluctant to use the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra because of the side effects associated with the erectile dysfunction medication Cialis (tadalafil). There is a growing body of evidence that Viagra is safe and effective for use in the male patient. It is known that patients taking Viagra have an increased sexual desire and thus improved erectile function. Thus, in this study, we studied the effect of tadalafil on sexual function in Chinese men with erectile dysfunction and other male disorders.
Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted in a community-based clinic setting in Shanghai. All participants were asked to have a history of erectile dysfunction, and a medical questionnaire was used to collect information on erectile dysfunction (ED) and other sexual disorders. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: one group was treated with tadalafil (tadalafil, 100 mg daily for 12 weeks, and placebo) and the other group was treated with sildenafil (Viagra, 50 mg daily for 10 days). The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire at the beginning of the study and after a few counseling sessions for ED. The treatment group was started at the beginning of the second study period and continued for 10 consecutive months. The placebo group was treated with placebo for the first 10 months of the study. Both the treatment and placebo groups received sildenafil as the first dose of Viagra, and the patients were given placebo and Viagra (10 mg sildenafil). Both groups were followed up for a month and at the conclusion of the study, they were diagnosed with erectile dysfunction according to the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-EF) questionnaire. The sexual dysfunction questionnaire was completed by the patients. At the conclusion of the study, the results of this study demonstrated that sildenafil treatment significantly improved the ability to perform intercourse in both the men and women who received treatment with Viagra, while Viagra was not significantly better than placebo (P<0.001). The most common side effects of tadalafil treatment were headache, nausea, and diarrhea. In addition, the erectile function of both groups was significantly improved. These results suggest that tadalafil is effective and safe for treating erectile dysfunction in patients with erectile dysfunction.
The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Shanghai Jinshua Hospital (IRB No. 20150-062-0). The study was conducted in accordance with the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and Good Clinical Practice guidelines. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants before the study. Results:The mean age was 60.2 years (±10.6 years). Most of the participants were Chinese and were mostly from the middle-income countries. Approximately 80% were female and the average BMI was 28.2 ± 4.9 kg/m2. Of the participants, 25.7% were aged 40 years and older, while the average BMI was 35.6 ± 5.5 kg/m2. Most of the participants had moderate to severe ED and none had any other health conditions that were bothersome or painful. Patients with chronic diseases of the penis (eg, diabetes or hypertension) were over 70 years of age. The average International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score was 26.3 ± 4.1 points, which was significantly lower than that in the control group (22.3 ± 3.9 points). The average IIEF score was 23.6 ± 3.2 points, which was significantly lower than that in the placebo group (27.6 ± 3.1 points). Most of the participants had an intact penis, with or without erectile dysfunction. Viagra was significantly better than placebo (P<0.001). The most common side effects of sildenafil treatment were headache and nausea.
The study was conducted in two phases. The first was conducted in the 2-month treatment phase (2M). The second was conducted in the 4-month treatment phase (4M).Figure 1:The effect of tadalafil treatment on the sexual function of Chinese men with erectile dysfunction and other male disorders. The participants were randomized to either treatment or placebo. The data for all participants was analyzed by the Student's t-test.
